ELLS represented at European Universities Coordinators Working Retreat in Brussels

Representatives of the EuroLeague of Life Sciences Universities (ELLS) joined the European Universities Coordinators Working Retreat, held in Brussels on 13–14 April 2026.

The event was organised by DG EAC and ForEU4ALL and brought together around 150–200 participants from European University Alliances and related networks. ELLS was represented by Romi Pena (University of Lleida) and Tjallie Botden (Wageningen University & Research).

The retreat provided an important opportunity to exchange views on the future of the European Universities Initiative and the role of alliances in strengthening European higher education. Discussions focused on future Erasmus+ funding models, student mobility, strategic sectors for European competitiveness, the European Research Area, and how alliances can demonstrate institutional transformation.

During the sessions, ELLS representatives contributed perspectives from the position of a Seal of Excellence holder, underlining the importance of accessible future funding opportunities and more flexible models for implementation. The discussions also highlighted the need to broaden the understanding of student mobility, with greater emphasis on learning outcomes and diverse international experiences.

The retreat further explored the contribution of alliances to Europe’s strategic priorities, including STEM education, micro-credentials, joint transnational programmes, links with industry, and support for early-career researchers. These areas offer strong opportunities for ELLS to build on its existing collaboration in life sciences education, research and institutional learning.

A key message from the event was that European University Alliances have moved beyond the pilot phase and are now an established part of the European higher education landscape. ELLS will continue to follow the outcomes of the retreat and explore opportunities for further engagement with European partners, national ministries and future EU initiatives.
