Natural Disaster Prevention focused on Floods and Droughts

Description
The Workshop is held June 18 to 27, 2008 at the Czech University of Agriculture Prague, Faculty of Forestry and Environment. One week of home studies is followed by ten days in the Czech Republic (8 days indoor and 2 days field excursions). It is sponsored by the Czech Government and by the United Nations Strategy for Disaster Reduction Secretariat (ISDR).
It is designed preferably for ELLS MSc. students, and also for PhD. students and young
professionals who desire to enhance their knowledge in management of disasters of
hydrometeorological origin. Therefore, a general background in environmental sciences,
insight in hydrology, water resources management and social sciences is recommended.
Teaching staff is recruited from CUA Prague, BOKU Vienna, WUR Wageningen and other
ELLS universities and international institutions.
Objectives
- to apply theory of hydrological extremes to practical events
- to learn new methods of floods and droughts hazard assessment
- to recognize and select a proper early warning method
- to learn new tools for collecting, analysing and implementing hydrological data
- to combine different methods of mitigation and recovery flood and drought disasters
- to acquaint the role of civil society when water disasters come
Participants
The course is designed for 20 to 30 students after BSc in Land and Water or related programmes.

Costs
Travel cost to and from Prague: The travel expenses from the participant's home country to Prague and back must be borne by each participant (or his/her sending university)
Cost of stay in Prague: The stay cost (boarding and lodging) in Prague will be provided by the Czech University of Agriculture in Prague with some support of other organisations.
