Breeding, development and training of the young horse

6 - 18 Aug. 2007 at Flyinge National Stud, Skåne, Sweden

This MSc course focuses on the young horse; from reproduction and management of the mare, to parturition, development, training and management of the young horse for future durability. The course also covers important aspects of preventive health management, as well as the importance of a well defined breeding program for successful development of horse populations.

The course will be held as an intensive NOVA summer course 6-18 August 2007 at Flyinge National Stud in Southern Sweden, with SLU as main course organizer. The facilities provide unique opportunities to obtain hands on experience during practicals on stud farm horses in between theoretical lectures. Some course literature will be distributed to the students in advance for self studies as preparation for the course..

Participants

Students from the NOVA universities are eligible to apply for the course. A limited number of students from the Euroleague (ELLS) universities will also be accepted. Max 40 students will be enrolled in total.

Prerequisites

BSc in Veterinary Medicine, alternatively 180 ECTS (120p) of a Veterinary Medicine program, or BSc in Animal Science, alternatively 180 ECTS (120p) of an Agriculture - Animal Science program, or of any equivalent program of these. General knowledge of European horse management. Skills in English.

Accomoodation and costs

Accommodation will be arranged at the Flyinge stud. Room cost 250 SEK per night and person in double room.
