Participatory forest policy planning and management

Objectives of the course
The summer school will provide an advanced understanding about the different features of participatory forestry and focus on the various dimensions of participation. Also an overview of the different types of participatory forestry in Europe and their role in national forest policies will be provided. The following issues will be dealt with:
- Overview of the history of participatory forestry in Europe
- Overview of the main dimensions of participation within forestry
- Identification of the various types and meanings of participatory forestry in a comparative European perspective
- Identification of main critical issues regarding the further development of participatory forestry in Europe
After the course students should be familiar with the different types of participatory forestry and the manner in which this concept is applied in different European countries. They should have insight in the characteristics of participation and how specific characteristics are reflected in different participatory forestry schemes. They should also be cognisant about the perspectives within different European countries on the significance and development scope of participatory forestry.
Content of the course
The course is structured in three parts.
- During the first part of the course students will have to study basic background literature on participation and participatory forestry.
- During the second part of the course students have to collect information on the status of and opinions regarding participatory in a specific European country and prepare a report on it. These activities will be carried out within a student's own university on the basis of a course manual.
- The third part of the course consist of a joint workshop for all course participants. During this course each participants will present the outcome of their country assessment; these presentations will form the basis for systematic comparative analysis of the status of participatory forestry in Europe and will allow to prepare a general overview of the status of participatory forestry in Europe. Each student will have to prepare a synthesis paper based on the discussions at the workshop.
