Environmental Sciences 2010: Water Disaster Prevention (WDP2010)

The summer school will be held from 20 to 26 June 2010 at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Faculty of Environmental Sciences. It is divided into two sections: in the first students will concentrate on individual studies at their respective institution for half a week, in the second they will attend a week of lectures, exercises and field trips in the Czech Republic.The summer school is designed preferably for bachelor students from partner universities of the Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS) as well as for young professionals, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the management
of disasters of hydrometeorological origin. Lectures will be delivered in English by professors from CULS Prague, BOKU Vienna and WUR Wageningen. Guest lecturers will come from other ELLS universities and International Institutions. A good command of English and a general background in environmental sciences, insight in hydrology and social sciences are the required prerequisites.
Objectives
- Learning the standard methods of floods and droughts hazard assessment
- Learning how to recognize a proper early warning method
- Using new tools for collecting and implementing hydrological data
- Combining different methods of mitigation and recovery in floods and droughts disasters
- Getting acquainted with the role of the civil society when water disasters occur
Participants
The capacity of the summer school is limited to 25–30 students.
Preference will be given to BSc students from the study areas such as “Land and
Water Management” or “Environmental Sciences”.

Costs
No registration or tuition fees are required.Accommodation and meals will be provided to registered participants free of charge. Travel costs (to and from Prague) will be borne by the participating students (or by their home university).
