Economics, Management and Social Sciences: Their Application in Rural Development
08 July – 15 July 2012Introduction
This summer school is an international cooperation within the scope of the European League of Life Sciences and is organised by faculties and departments that focus on economics, management and social sciences from BOKU Vienna, CULS Prague, SGGW Warsaw and Wageningen University in cooperation with the University of Hohenheim, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the University of Copenhagen. It addresses rural development issues in interdisciplinary views and aims to bring students and teachers from various countries and fields of work together in order to discuss subjects, to exchange knowledge, to improve the quality of student’s work and to improve and test the skills of students in a practical project.Participants
This Summer School targets PhD, MSc and excellent BSc students, who deal with rural development.The number of participants is limited to 25 students.
Schedule
8th – 15th July 2012: Intensive Summer School EMSS at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague.Credits
Participation in the Summer School and fulfilling given study requirements will be awarded by 4ECTS. The students are expected to do their preliminary work (preparing papers) of about 50 hours during April, May and June before participating in the Summer School. Student papers will be published in the Summer School materials if required quality standards will be met (at the discretion of the editors).

Information
The underlying idea of the Summer School EMSS is to give students the opportunity to present drafts of their Master and PhD theses, which is related to rural development and to get some critical feedback and ideas from other students and teachers.
Activities
prior to Summer School
Students have to prepare papers that shall be linked to the topic of their thesis. Additionally, the students have to give comments and feedback on papers of other students that will be discussed during the Summer School.
Each student will present her or his paper in a class, where it will be subsequently discussed. Teachers from the ELLS Universities will give lectures concerning the topic of the Summer School. The programme of the Summer School will also include excursions into Czech rural areas in order to become familiar with current problems of rural development in the Czech Republic. Identified problems will serve as a basis for elaborating case studies, which will be presented and defended by the students at the final session of the Summer School. The students are expected to provide the feedback and comments from the classes.
Summer School EMSS 2012
Every student will present her or his paper in class, where it will be

their current research topic and specialisation. Also 1 excursion will be
organised for the participants and students will carry out a case study of a
rural development project.

The total fees of EUR 390,- will cover the costs which include:

The travelling cost to and from Prague are not covered.
The students should ask at their home universities for possible financial assistance or grants.
The payment for the Summer School has to be made until the 31st May 2012. A cancellation fee in the amount of 250,- EUR has to be made if a student cancels his/her participation.
